sapphic ceremonies

Congratulations! You've made the wonderful decision to in some way celebrate and commemorate the love you have for each other. Whether that is with a marriage ceremony, a civil partnership ceremony,  a 'we love each other but we're not getting married' ceremony, or a vow renewal,  it would be my privilege to help you create something as special and unique as your relationship!

Katie Wood - celebrant

Love is love - and it's a beautiful thing!

After a health issue sent me searching for new challenges and new ways to bring meaningful connection into my life - I found celebrancy. A celebrant holds space for two people to mark their love and commitment to each other, and have whoever is important to them witness it and share in it. This ceremony, like you as two individuals and like your relationship, is unique, and the joy of being a celebrant is that I can help you create exactly what you want. This may involve cultural or religious elements, but equally, it may not. It may be big, it may be small. It may be indoors or outside. It may be traditional or avant garde! It's your day - and together we can explore how to make it the best day! Further down this page you will find information about some of the many possibilities...

I am a fully trained celebrant with the International College of Professional Celebrants, and regularly attend professional development sessions with supportive colleagues, so that I can keep up to date with ideas and elements and maintain best practice. Previous to becoming a celebrant, I worked for many years in teacher training of English teachers, and this work took me to many different countries, cultures and situations; a good training ground for dealing with people, practicalities and communication.

What is a celebrant and why should I have a celebrant led ceremony?

A celebrant celebrates! We are not involved in the legal elements of a ceremony, and the registration of a marriage or civil partnership needs to be completed by a registrar and registered with your local authority. This is usually done before the celebrant led ceremony. You will need to give notice of your intent to marry / undertake a civil ceremony prior to the atual registration. Check your local authority website for further information. The cost of registering your marriage or civil partnership is currently £46.

Following your completion of the legal paperwork, you are free to celebrate in any way you see fit at the place of your choice! And this is where a celebrant can bring joy, individuality and bespoke services to your special day. You are also free to incorporate a religious element (which is not permitted at the registration) and perhaps one of the beautiful rituals described further down this page.  Although you will have signed a wedding schedule document at the registry office, we can still incorporate a signing of your uniquely designed wedding ceremony certificate, so as to get those all important 'signing' photos and have whoever you like take part in this element of your ceremony.

your vows to each other

Vows are a central part of any commitment ceremony and express the very essence of your relationship. Whether you know exactly what promises you would like to make to each other and are happy to write and read out your own vows, or whether you'd like me to write them for you with your guidance, or something in between, I am here to support you to whatever extent you need. We can work together to create something beautiful!

components

Most ceremonies will include important vows or promises, but there are many other beautiful rituals we can add to your ceremony to fully represent and involve you and your loved ones.

For example, consider the ancient ceremony of handfasting - the symbolic tying together of hands to represent the joining of two lives.Perhaps you'd both like to drink from a ceremonial cup of Celtic origin (a quaich or loving cup), symbolising love and trust, or you might like the sound of creating a wedding tie capsule!

Maybe there is a family tradition you'd like to incorporate - your ideas can be woven into your ceremony.

venue

The beauty of a celebrant led ceremony is it can be done pretty much anywhere! Would you like an intimate ceremony in your garden?  How about a blessing on a boat? Perhaps you would like nature to feature prominently, in which case holding your ceremony in some woodland could be perfect. Or maybe you'd like to involve your community and have the ceremony in a function room, clubhouse or village hall. The choice is yours!

the process

how does it work?

If you think what you see here might align with what you want for your special day, use the contact form below to get in touch. We can then arrange a no obligation initial meeting,  via Zoom or similar, (or in person depending on locations). At this time, you can get a feel for me and what I do, and decide if you would like to work together.

If so, your package (starting from £650), would include as standard:

  •  a minimum of 2 detailed planning meetings (at least 1 of which should be face to face), to get to know you and discuss options, usually lasting around an hour each
  • unlimited communication through phone and email to check in and discuss arrangements / ideas before the ceremony
  • creation of personalised ceremony script and guidance for, or writing of vows
  • travel within 50 miles of either Newcastle or York (any other area of the UK is possible but will incur travel expenses)
  • 1 hour rehearsal session
  • attendance at and delivery of the ceremony
  • unique ceremony certificates signed during the ceremony
